Tone describes the coloration of sound and arises from the combination of harmonics that accompany the fundamental frequency in each source.
Harmonics add complexity to sound and allow instruments or voices to be distinguished even when they emit the same note; each source has a unique spectral pattern, generating characteristic timbres that enrich perception and allow sources to be identified quickly.
